The development office serves all departments, research centers, faculty, and staff within the Division of Social Sciences in the following ways:

Fundraising

  • We serve as your main point of contact for University Advancement, including the UC Santa Cruz Foundation, to identify funding leads that align with divisional goals and secure visits with prospective donors. In addition, we:
    • Support annual fundraising initiatives for departments and research centers, including crowdfunding campaigns and events like the annual Giving Day.
    • Collaborate with faculty to identify and assess potential donors who may contribute to research funding.
    • Guide faculty on effective strategies for engaging donor leads and securing referrals.
    • Support development-focused donor events.
    • Connect the Division with University Advancement’s resources to enhance visibility and impact.
    • Process and record donations in compliance with University policies.

Gift processing

  • Receive and process incoming gifts and donations.
  • Coordinate the creation of new fund designations.
  • Research the background, donor intent, and purpose of gifts for recipients to ensure a clear understanding of how the funds can be utilized.

Student scholarships and awards

  • Collaborate with scholarship recipients and their academic departments to develop impact statements for donors, highlighting the significance of their support.

Please have checks made out to: UC Santa Cruz Foundation, and ask the donor to be sure to include the gift purpose in the memo line.



  1. The department contacts the development office to inquire about the available funds for the upcoming award.
  2. The department selects the student for the award, notifies them, and informs the development staff by either cc’ing (socsci@ucsc.edu) on the award notification or sending a separate announcement.
  3. The department submits the required paperwork to process the student award payment.
    1. If the award is to be paid via a Financial Aid FOAPAL, please use the department awards form accessible via the Financial Aid website, with more information on the Financial Aid & Scholarships (FASO) site.
    2. If the award will be funded through a department FOAPAL, please contact your research analyst for assistance in completing the UCSC Fellowship & Scholarship Payment Worksheet and Direct Pay forms.
  4. The Development Office coordinates with student recipients of department awards to gather three key items: a completed “In Their Words” questionnaire, a student photo, and a handwritten thank-you note. These materials are used to update student stories sections on our websites and are included in a donor appreciation package to acknowledge their generosity.
