Your gift supports multiple undergraduate who produce the best papers of the academic year within the Latin American and Latino Studies Department. This merit-based award reduces economic barriers to education for exceptional students in the department, many of whom are first-generation college students.
This award was established to honor beloved professor Wally Goldfrank’s legacy, who joined the UCSC Sociology faculty in 1968 and helped found the Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) Program in 1997. Three years later, in 2000, the program earned department status. Goldfrank was also instrumental in the creation of the LALS Ph.D. program in 2014—the first of its kind in the world to integrate area and ethnic studies within a doctoral program.
